The Balkampet Yellamma Temple is a well-known religious landmark in Hyderabad. With a long and storied past, it’s no surprise that this ancient temple is constantly bustling with worshippers. Being located 10 feet below ground, Balkampet Yellamma in this temple is believed to as a very powerful goddess. Legend has it that the divine Maa herself made an appearance in this locale in a well.
The temple is packed on Sundays and Tuesdays. On these two days, devotees assemble in great numbers and offer prayers to the Goddess. Devotees flock to the temple every day at dawn to worship the Goddess, prepare their meals, and eat & share with other devotees who visit the temple. Devotees see Balkampet Yellamma as the mother who fulfills the wishes of the devotees. Those who are sick are said to be healed after paying a visit to the goddess and receiving a prasad of water from the well. Many believe that if you bring some of the water back to their house and sprinkle it, any problems they may be having would magically disappear.
A great number of worshipers gather throughout the month of Ashada to present ‘bonam’ to the Goddess. Between five and six lakh people every year pay their homage to Balkampet Yellama during the Kalyana Utsav. Celebrations of Dussehra are also held in magnificent fashion.
The current temple was erected in the 19th century by Sri Raja Shivraj Bahadur. Pochamma was subsequently enshrined in the southern section of the temple shortly after its construction. Pushapgiri Peethadhipathiti Sri Sri Sri Vidyanrisimha Bharathiswami and Visakha Sarada Peethas Sri Sri Sri Swaroop Narendraswami enshrined an idol similar to that in the well of Goddess Yellamma for worshippers to offer ‘bonam’ close to the Nagalayam in the temple grounds.
Lord Vinayaka, Goddess Rajarajeshwari, Goddess Pochamma, and Nagadevata are all venerated at the Ellamma temple’s upalayas.
The Balkampet Yellamma temple is open for devotees from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM and from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM every day. There is no entry fee here. Its central location means that it can be reached by both public transportation and private vehicles.
Ameerpet Metro Station is just 2 km away from the temple. Autos are easily available to reach the temple from the metro station. Balkampet bus stop is just 100 mts away from the temple. The one drawback is that there is no designated parking area for visitors, so those driving their own cars may have trouble finding a spot along the street.
