Adenovirus is a virus that can cause respiratory illness, mild cold or flu-like symptoms. Children under the age of five are more vulnerable to this virus. The recent spike in Adenovirus cases in Hyderabad and other parts of the country has raised concerns among health authorities.
While the symptoms of Adenovirus are similar to the common cold and flu, it can lead to severe complications in some cases. The virus is highly contagious and can spread through direct contact with an infected person, touching contaminated surfaces, or by inhaling droplets containing the virus.
Experts suggest that most cases of Adenovirus can be treated at home and do not require hospitalization. However, in severe cases, hospitalization may be required, especially for children under the age of five. If you or your child experience any symptoms of Adenovirus, such as fever, cough, sore throat, or pink eye, it is important to seek medical attention immediately.
During December and January, Niloufer Children’s Hospital received numerous pneumonia cases, with 1,800-2,000 outpatients and all 1,200 inpatient beds occupied. The officials stated that patient numbers declined after the temperature increased.
The hospital officials reported nearly 200 cases resembling adenovirus. When asked, Niloufer Hospital superintendent Dr. T Usha Rani stated that the hospital commonly receives patients with viral fever and cold cough, and some patients even succumb to the infection during treatment.
It is recommended that individuals take precautions to prevent the spread of Adenovirus, such as washing hands frequently, covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing, and avoiding close contact with people who are sick. Additionally, health authorities in Hyderabad and other parts of the country have issued advisories to citizens, asking them to stay alert and take necessary precautions.
