The Rashtrapati Bhavan or the Rashtrapati Nilayam formerly called the Residency House is the official presidential retreat located in Hyderabad, Telangana for the president’s annual southern sojourn. The total area of Rashtrapati Bhavan is spread across an area of 92 acres, ou of which 35 acres is occupied by the mansion and the remaining area is flourished with fragrant flower gardens, lush green lawns and vegetation. It has been the resident for several former presidents such as Gyani Zail Singh, K R Narayan, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Pratibha Patil, Ramnath Kovind and the present President Droupadi Murmu.

 

The Rashtrapati Bhavan was constructed in the year 1850 by the Nizam Nasir-ud-Dauhla, the fourth ruler of the Asaf Jahi dynasty during his reign from 1829 to 1857. During this period, the Residency House was also the office of Sir Salar Jung, Nizam’s Prime Minister. Later, it was the residence of the Nizam government’s chief military officer. In 1948, after Hyderabad was included in the Indian Union, the Residency House became a traditional president’s retreat. During the winter season, the President almost stays here for two weeks and conducts official business. For the visiting dignitaries, RP Bhavan is also used as a guest house.

Rashtrapati Nilayam

The single-storeyed white mansion which covers almost 35 acres of land is divided into 3 wings – Presidential wing, Family wing and ADC wing. The 20-room mansion constitutes Cinema Hall, State Dining Hall, Morning Room, Durbar Hall and ADC Dining room. To restrict staff interference and noise, the kitchen is connected to the dining hall through an underground tunnel. Besides, the building is equipped with a visitor’s headquarters that can accommodate up to 150 people. During the former president Pratibha Patil’s tenure, the area around the house underwent miraculous changes and became more environment-friendly, built drip irrigation systems and planted vegetative plantations.

The premises comprise landscaped garden, display of potted plants, seasonal flowering plants, natural cascading waterfalls and different types of nutrition gardens that include guava, cheeku, pomegranate, mango, amla and coconut. There is also a herbal garden spread over 7000 sq.mts which is of medicinal and aromatic plants inaugurated in December 2009. The garden was built by Telangana Medicinal Plants Board and CPWD, while the project was funded by Rashtrapati Bhavan and National Medicinal Plants Board. This herbal garden has around 116 species of medicinal and aromatic plants, out of which few important plants are kalabandha, sarpagandha, lemon grass, citronella, khus, coriander, geranium, tuber rose, sandalwood, jasmine, tulsi, kalmegh, etc.

The exact location of the Rashtrapati Bhavan is Bolarum, Secunderabad. It is open to pubic viewing from 1 January to 10 January, otherwise, the entry is exclusive. The visiting hours are from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM with the last entry is allowed until 4:00 PM only. Visitors are not allowed to carry food items, water bottles, handbags, mobile phones, cameras, arms and ammunition. There are food stalls the provide snacks to the visitors. The Rashtrapati Bhavan is located at a distance of 9 km from Secunderabad and the closest railway station to it is Cavalry Barack Railway Station. Tour guides help the visitors in briefing the geography and history of the RP Bhavan.
