This temple is situated in Palampet village of Venkatapur Mandal in Mulugu Taluk and is around 160 km from the city of Hyderabad. In the Deccan region, in the network of the medieval temple, Ramappa temple is referred to as the brightest star. The temple is a fine example of the Kakatiya style of architecture that is built on a six feet high star-shaped platform. In front of the sanctum, there is a hall with numerous carved pillars that are positioned in such a way that there is ample space and proper light coming in. The three entrances to the sanctum are flanked by carvings and detailed statues. The main structure is built out of reddish sandstone and the amorous statues are carved out of black granite. The columns outside are carved with mythical animals, musicians and daintily Mandakinis.
There are many amazing carvings, but the most special ones include at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum is the flute, which when hit makes the sound sa-ri-ga-ma. The pillars boast such fine carvings where one could even pass a strand of hair through them. The sculptors carved the beams with the stories featuring Ksheera sagar madhanam, Daksha yagnam, Daksha samharam, Tripurasura samharam, Narakasura vadha, Gajasura samharam and Gopika vastrapaharanam. Perhaps, it is the only temple to be named after the sculptor, Ramappa.
Ramappa temple is formed by the three distinct sections – Antaral, Maha Mandap and Garbhagrih. The sandbox technology is used in the foundation of the temple and the (shikhara) roof of the temple is built with low-density bricks, which can even float on the water. Pillars which hold the Ramappa temple are decorated by the elephants, lotus motifs and even the images of Narasimha and Ganesha. The pradakshina path which surrounds the sanctum is dotted with a shikhara. The moment you enter the temple, facing the lord Shiva shrine is the Nandi (divine vehicle of Lord Shiva) carved on the Nandi mandapam.
On a two-day visit, September 25th and 26th 2019, representing the UNESCO, Mr. Poshayanandana, an expert from International Council for Monuments and Structures (ICOMOS) along with other officials visited the Ramappa temple to assess it on the claim of the Telangana state government to secure the tag of World Heritage Site.
