Nehru Zoological Park is one of the most loved and visited attractions in Hyderabad with over 1500 species finding their habitat here with almost 380 acres of land area. In execution of recommendations of Indian Board for Wildlife, Govt. of India, the Zoological Park was opened to the public in the year 1963. It is also known as Hyderabad Zoo, located 16 km away from the city which near the Mir Alam Tank. This Zoological Park is considered as one of the largest zoos in India and has been named after the first prime minister of the country, Jawaharlal Nehru. It was inaugurated by the then  Governor of Andhra Pradesh, General S.M. Sri.Nagesh, on 6th October 1963.

 

The Zoo has many changes and additions to its credit which include first Safari Park in the country in the year 1974; Nocturnal House in the year 1982; and Open Butterfly park in the year 1988. It celebrated the Golden Jubilee in the year 2013. After the formation of the new state, Telangana, the Zoo has 155 Species and 1550 Specimens. The main objective of developing this Zoological Park was to conserve the wildlife, especially the endangered species of the Deccan plateau and also rehabilitating them. Other objectives were to educate people about wildlife and facilitate researches on animal behaviour.

Rich Fauna at the Zoo Park

Hyderabad Zoo boasts a rich variety of wildlife with more than 140 species of animals, birds and mammals. The 600 acre Mir Alam Tank attracts many migratory birds from all over the world.

Avian Fauna – Parrots, Macaws, Owls, Herons, Pelicans, Storks, Cranes, Egrets, Eagles, Hornbills, Love birds, Parakeets, Cocktails, Gheese, Pheasants, Lories.

Reptiles – Marsh Crocodile, Gharial, Saltwater Crocodile, Chaimen, Python, King Cobra, Cobra, Sand boa, Russell’s Viper, Green vine snake, Rat snake, Monitor lizards, Chameleon, Star Tortoise, Turtles.

Mammals – Asiatic Lion, Bengal Tiger, Indian Rhinoceros, Panther, Indian Elephant, Fishing Cat, Sambar Deer, Leopard, Wild dog, Black bear, Chimpanzee, Monkeys, Macaque, Baboon, Langur.

Things to do at the Zoo Park

One can find a number of things to do at the Zoo Park which offers a variety of entertaining things.

Safari Park – One of the main attractions at the Zoo Park is the Safaris. One can choose from Lion Safari, Tiger Safari, Bison Safari and Bear Safari. Safaris are a perfect way to get a view of the amazing wild animals such as lions, tigers, sloth bears, deers and etc,. The charge for safari rides is Rs. 30 for children and Rs. 50 for adults.

Buggy/Battery Operated Vehicles – These environment-friendly Battery operated vehicles offer a hassle-free tour of Zoo Park. Visitors can enjoy a comfortable ride exploring its rich flora and fauna. The buggy ride can go for about 30 min to 1 hr. The ride tickets for children is Rs. 40 and for adults is  Rs. 60.

Toy Train – Another significant attraction at the zoo is the toy train which is very popular among kids. Charges for toy train are  Rs. 10 for children and Rs. 20 for adults.

Boating – The Mir Alam Lake offers boating at the Zoological Park which is organized by the TSTDC.

Bicycle Rides – Riding on a bicycle inside the Zoo Park is another fun activity. Bicycles are available for a minimum rent of Rs. 20 per hour.

Children’s Park – The Zoo has an exclusive children’s park where the children have multiple choices to engage and enjoy.

Jurassic Park – Here is one more attraction for the kids. The Jurassic Park boasts life-size figures of different Dinosaurs – Triceratops, Brontosaurus, Stegosaurus, Tyrannosaurus.

Butterfly Park – It was started in the year 1988 and hosts an innumerable variety of butterflies. Hyderabad Zoo is first in the country to start a park that is exclusively dedicated to butterflies.

Aquarium – There is a huge aquarium in the Zoo with a number of freshwater as well as marine water species. Exotic fish varieties attract every visitor.

Museum – The museum has a variety of exhibits such as biodiversity conservation, pug marks, feathers of various animals along with taxidermy models.

The Nocturnal House – This house is special because an artificial reversal of day and night cycle is created for the nocturnal animals that include cats, owls, civets, loris and bats. The ticket price is Rs.20 for adults and Rs.10 for kids.

Facilities and Features of the Zoo Park

For the convenience of tourists/visitors, the Zoo Park provides various facilities such as safe drinking water, washrooms, first aid room, battery-operated vehicles, fire-safety and separate parking lot. There is also a Zoo Guest House (rental basis) open from 9 AM to 5.50 PM. for those who would like to spend an entire day. A food court with multi-cuisine choices is also available.

Plastic-free Zone – The visitors are not allowed to carry plastic bags or items inside the Zoo park. If you have any such items, you can submit them to the security personnel at the entrance gate.

Security Maintenance – More than 35 security guards are stationed all over the Zoo park to safeguard and protect the wild animals and endangered species. They also assist in finding lost items by the visitors.
