It is a man-made reservoir created to serve as the primary source of water for Hyderabad and Secunderabad and also to protect the city after the Great Musi Flood that occurred on September 1908 in which nearly 15,000 people died. Bharat Ratna Mokshagundam Visvesvarayya who was assisted by the Nawab Ali Nawaj Jung finalized the plan and design of the reservoir, and the construction was supervised by the Nizam’s chief engineer Ahmed Mirza.
Away from the hustle-bustle of the city life, this peaceful lake and soothing atmosphere offer decent staying options by its side. A heritage building, Sagar Mahal was built here as a summer resort for Nizams and later it was transformed into a recreation spot which is open for tourists who can click photographs and laze around. This mahal is beautified with landscaped gardens and swimming pool by the tourism department. It houses around 10 double bedrooms for the accommodation of visitors those who like to stay overnight. Scrumptious delicacies are also offered to the guests with a royal ambience.
The colourful flora, vegetation and trees towards the lower side of the dam makes the place really picturesque. The best time to visit the Gandipet Lake is during the months of October and March. Most of the people visit the lake early in the morning for a sunrise which is utterly refreshing, however, sunset also lures many visitors. The reservoir is filled to the brim after a good monsoon, which makes the sight a breathtaking one. There is also an option for visitors to go for boating and experience the calm waters and beautiful surroundings.
