Birla Mandir is a popular Hindu temple in Hyderabad, India built on a 280 feet high hillock situated around a 13-acre plot. This glistening white structure was built by the Birlas which dots the skyline of modern Hyderabad. It is entirely constructed with nearly 2000 tonnes of white marble that are imported from Rajasthan and it almost took a decade to finish the construction. The Birla Foundation has built many Birla temples across the country that are dedicated to different Hindu deities such as Shiva, Vishnu, Rama, Saraswathi, Vithoba, Radha Krishna and Venkateshwara. This Birla temple in Hyderabad is dedicated to Lord Sri Venkateshwara.

The temple was sanctified by Swami Ranganathananda of Ramakrishna Mission in 1976. The architectural style of the temple is a healthy fusion of Utkal (Oriya) and South Indian. Jagadananda Vimanam, the tower over the main shrine represents the Oriyan style and the Rajagopuram represents South Indian style. The sanctum sanctorum of the temple is a replica of the Lord Balaji at Tirumala. The temple’s flagstaff is 42 feet in height and is entirely made of bronze. The main presiding deity is 11-feet tall which is made of granite and has carved lotus canopy above that adds to the beauty of the deity.

Padmavati and Andal, the consorts of Lord Venkateshwara are housed in the separate shrines. The temple also has separate shrines for other Hindu Gods that include Brahma, Shiva, Ganesh, Hanuman, Saraswati, Lakshmi and Saibaba. The temple even houses a mini temple dedicated to Buddha which describes his life through fresco paintings. The walls are engraved with Gurbani and teachings of other revered saints. Even you can find the depiction of scenes from Mahabharata and Ramayana. All these different styles of carvings create an enchanting atmosphere inside the temple that pulls back visitors time and again.

The temple overlooks Hussain Sagar Lake and even gives the panoramic view of the beautiful twin cities – Hyderabad and Secunderabad. It is considered to be one of the gorgeous viewpoints in the city. In the evening times, the temple presents a spectacular sight upon illumination. The green lawns and colourful roses around add to the character of the temple. Unlike most Hindu temples, this temple has no temple bells inside which provides the unruffled tranquillity that helps you to meditate. Visiting the temple in the early hours or in the evening can give you a divine experience. Birla planetarium and Birla Science Museum cannot be overlooked which are located just nearby the Birla temple.
