Kurumurthy Swamy is known as Kurumati and is worshiped by devotees as the Tirupati of the poor. The history of the temple says that Venkateshwara, who is the only God of Tirupati, also appeared in Kurumurthy. In Tirupati, Lord Venkateshwara is standing between the seven hills in the same way here too. Devotees say that the Swamivari Murthy statue has similar postures of Tirupati Venkateshwara Swamy.
According to historical evidence, Kurumurthy Swamy Temple was built around 1350. Uddalotsavam is said to be the main event of this Kurumurthi Brahmotsavam. These uddalu are brought from Vaddeman village as a procession to the Lord. Devotees flock in lakhs especially to visit Lord Shiva’s feet which are made of cow skin. This Kurumurthi fair continues for a month.
Every year Brahmotsavams are organized for Swami. Among these, the “Uddala Utsavam” i.e. the making of padukas is the main event. Tanners in Vaddeman village work hard for a week to make these padukas from cow skin brought from Rayalaseema. On the day of the festival, the Padukas are worshiped at the Anjaneyaswamy temple, welcomed at the bottom of the hill, taken to the presence of Kurumurthy in the Kanchana cave, and then decorated by the Swami in the Uddala mandapam. It is believed that if the devotees hit their heads and backs with the padukas sitting in this mandapam, sins will be removed. Lakhs of devotees attend this fair just for this festival of Uddala.
